RocketCams 3-for-3 on Atlas 5 Launch of Rainbow 1

2003 Jul 17

The launch of the largest Atlas 5 launch vehicle to date occurred today with live views from three onboard RocketCam systems produced by Ecliptic and supplied to Lockheed Martin Astronautics.

The launch window opened at 7:20 pm EDT, but several delays led to an actual launch time of 7:45 pm. The Rainbow-1 spacecraft was precisely inserted into the desired transfer orbit around 9:30 pm EDT.

This was the 27th successful launch with RocketCams since 1997 — over fifty separate camera systems.

The Spaceflight Now website has excellent summaries of the RocketCam plans and the Atlas 5 launcher and the Rainbow 1 spacecraft.
