World-Record Human Ballooning Attempt Delayed to Sep 3

2003 Sep 01

Two British balloon pilots in Russian-supplied spacesuits will attempt to break a long-standing record for high-altitude human ballooning on September 3rd (Wednesday) as the huge QinetiQ-1 (pronounced "Kinetic-1") balloon is launched from the southwestern coast of England at sunrise. The launch had been planned for Sep 2nd but was delayed due to poor weather.

The balloon's onboard live video system — seven cameras, a downlink transmitter and a pilot-actuated switch box — is an Ecliptic-supplied RocketCam™ system. The live video stream will be broadcast to a tracking station in England and routed to the BBC for periodic broadcasts during the planned 12-hour flight.

Learn more about and follow the mission at the QinetiQ-1 website!

Check the launch countdown clock regularly! Launch should occur around midnight EDT in the U.S., but could always be delayed due to the fickle weather over the north Atlantic Ocean.
