RocketCam Captures LRO and LCROSS Sendoff to Moon

2009 Jun 20

Ecliptic's RocketCam system captured the launch and departure of two NASA missions to the Moon on June 19, onboard an Atlas 5 rocket supplied by United Launch Alliance.

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) were successfully launched on a path to the Moon while still attached to the Atlas-Centaur upper stage, and about 45 minutes later LRO separated from the LCROSS/Centaur stack to complete its mission on its own.  LCROSS will be sheparded within Earth-Moon space by the Centaur stage for the next 3+ months, winding up for a lunar impact on October 9.
